Sen. Ron Wyden: The National Guard Needs Your Help

Sen. Ron Wyden: The National Guard Needs Your Help

When I first started reading this post, I got mad. I thought this guy was just going to complain, point out the bad stuff and not offer any solutions. Luckily, that is not the case.
The system in place for our National Guardsmen and Reservists is the system that's always been. At least for as long as I was aware and/or involved in it. The benefits awarded our "part time" military just don't cut it anymore. The problem is money. When the Defense budget is cut, sometimes they cut the wrong stuff.
Whether you like it or not, our military goes places. We are interventionists. We are baby sitters. For the entire world. "Somebody has to do it" is an argument I've heard my whole life. The average American isn't going to realize there are always troops/airmen/sailors somewhere in the world looking out for their interests. What they should realize, however, is that there are people in dangerous places doing dangerous things in the name of national security who come home and are left to their own devices to find medical care, counseling, jobs. It's up to us to support them. It's up to us to be their voice.
I'm happy to see someone in government doing something about the inequities our Reservists and Guardsmen face. I hope these bills will be passed by our legislators to take care of the gaps in coverage and support.

Here is information about a bill introduced by Senators Mark Udall, Mark Begich, Barbara Mikulski and Claire McCaskill to extend health coverage to military dependents through the age of 26.

I'm pretty liberal in my politics. I've been called a hippie plenty of times. But I will always and forever support our military members and their families. You can take the girl out of the military, but you can't take the military out of the girl.
